BMW E34 locking
How to resynchronize the door locks?
- After manually locking or unlocking the system, the door locks may become unsynchronized. To synchronize the locks, close all doors, trunk lid and tailgate. Lock the passenger door by turning the key clockwise into the emergency locking position (approximately 110 degrees from position O). Unlock the driver's door. If any of the locks do not operate, repeat the locking procedure until the locking system is synchronized. This might happen if a door which is not completely closed is locked, or a door handle is lifted before the interior lock button is raised.
Resetting radio after power is removed or display shows "CODE"
- If the correct code is not entered in the three successive tries, the radio will not accept entry until the radio has been ON for one hour. IMPORTANT: When entering 5-digit code number, be sure to complete sequence number of that 5-digit code. For example: Code No. sequence is 12345 and you mistakenly enter 125 instead of 123, continue the code number sequence of 45 to complete that entry. The radio will not operate and "CODE" will reappear in the display. Re-enter the correct number sequence of 12345 and operation of the radio will continue. NOTE: If an audible beep is heard while entering the 5-digit code, STOP immediately. Begin entering the code again, starting with the first number of the 5-digit code.
- Another solution from Steven V. The local BMW dealer told me that if I turn the ignition key to the number two position and leave all the dash lights on then disconnect the battery for fifteen minutes to a half hour. The system will re-program itself when the battery is connected. It does not say that in the manual or CD rom but it apparently worked fine. Of course the radio had to be recoded again.

Central locking E34
Correct formula to calculate the actual speed. Actual Speed = Actual Distance in metres / Time in sec * 3.6
Convenient is to stopwatch one kilometres time, say it is 20 seconds; 3600 / 20 = 180 Kmph. Mistake in checking the time for one tenth of second equals about 1 Km per hour.

E34 OBC Test Codes
Getting into the Test Codes:
Push OBC buttons 1000 and 10 together. You will see the word Test. By pressing a combination of the 10 and 1's you can enter Test Codes from 1 to 21. After entering the number press R/S and you will get a continuous display of the test function. To cancel, just press any of the OBC function keys.
List of Available Tests:
Test Number Description
- Display Test (all LCDs and LEDs activate)
- Current Consumption in litres / 100 km
- Current Consumption in litres / hour
- Average consumption (used in calculating range)
- Current Range
- Not used (this function is active on some, but not sure of the purpose)
- Fuel Remaining in Tank (litres)
- Current speed (km/h)
- System Voltage at Terminal R
- Country / Language
- Units / am.pm
- Average speed (km/h) for calculating ETA
- ETA
- Date of software / mask of OBC
- Production Diagnosis
- Production Diagnosis
- Display Vehicle Specific Data
- Alarm Changeover (continuous vs. intermittent)
- Lock / Unlock all functions (Sum of month and date to unlock or lock)
- Correction Factor for OBC Fuel Consumption
- Reset all defect codes, date and time
!!! You need to unlock the OBC before you can change the settings. !!!
How to lock and unlock the OBC:
- To unlock the OBC, first press the date key, and add the month and day together. So, if the date is displayed as "0704", the result is "11".
- Go to test 19 by pressing the 1000 and 10 buttons together, and then typing in the test number (19)·
- You will see the word "LOCK" displayed. Type in the result from step 1 above, and press S/R·
- If you display test 19 again, it will now display "FREI", indicating the system is now unlocked.
- To lock the system again, go to test 19, and press the little button on the top left hand corner of the OBC (F/C).
How to correct your fuel consumption readout:
If your car is anything like mine, the fuel consumption readout will be way out. But it can be adjusted! First, you need to measure your fuel consumption as accurately as possible, by filling up the tank, driving until nearly empty, filling again, and figuring out your fuel consumption, in either litres / 100 kms, or MPG. At this point, also note what the fuel consumption as reported by the OBC is. You need both figures to make the adjustment. Once you have that accurate figure, follow the following procedure:
- Unlock the OBC as described above.
- Go to test 20.
- This is the existing fuel consumption constant used in the calculation.
- Find the ratio between the old consumption reading, and the actual consumption reading:
- For litres per 100kms, this is the actual consumption divided by the reported consumption.
- For MPG, it is the opposite. Ie. It is the reported conumption divided by the actual consumption.
- Now multiply that ratio with the existing fuel consumption constant, the result is the new constant.
- Simply type in the new constant, and press S/R NOTE: Some claim that for some reason, if you don't drive your car for a day or two, the constant will reset back to 1000.
It is indeed possible to change the country code on an E34 OBC. Strangely enough, I couldn't do it on the E39. On E39, you can see and even unlock the test codes, but it still doesn't let you change the country code. Are we going backwards? In any case here is how to do it on E34:
- Get into the test mode and unlock the OBC following the instructions in my original message.
- Goto Test 10.
- By default, the country code is set to "LAND:0 D" which is Deutschland.
- Scroll though other countries by pressing "1". US is country code "LAND:2 USA" for example.
- When you see the country you want, press the "S/R" key to set it.
- Press the check key to test.
Note: When you set it to USA or UK, you will probably get the British Measurements. If you prefer metric ones (Km, Km/hr, Ltr. etc.) like I do, you will have to set each display separately. But you don't have to be in the test mode for that.

Warning display language
Is it possible to change the warning display language (ie the messages which appear above the service indicator lights on the dashboard, such as 'Handbrake On' 'Low Oil Pressure' etc - the default is German - can it be changed to other languages?).
That is piece of cake:
- Turn the ignition key to position one (first click).
- Push and hold down the cc button (right one).
- After 5-10 seconds in the cc display will appear a language name. If you want this language turn off the ignition and it is done. If you don´t want this language go again to step 2.
Be patient, there are lot of languages,) also English UK and English US

Is OBC eligible?
To determine if your OBC is eligible press 1000 and 10 together. You should see TEST NO. or something like that.
Now, some of the functions are locked out, I do NOT recommend messing with them and you do so at your own risk.
To unlock all functions press 1000 and 10 and at the TEST prompt, enter 19 using the keys, press SET/RES, you should see LOCK:ON or something similar, press the DATE key, (you'd see 08.20 on August 20th) and add the two numbers (day and month) together, it makes 28.
Now enter the number you just calculated (28) and press SET/RES. You have unlocked the secret functions.
To lock them back up press 1000 and 10 then enter 19, SET/RES, now press SET/RES again, it should show LOCK:ON again.
Car code display
With the key off, press in the OBC display reset button on the dash below the tach (the one that makes your readout disappear). Hold it in for 3 seconds and turn the key to position 2. Release the button, watch all of the car codings and then the final light show. That is the only way I want to see the tach go that high.
